Good Design Evaluation

  • In what ways have you considered the sustainability of your project process and outcomes? The design process of my magazine was done completely digitally meaning paper was wasted. When it came to test prints, I only did one test print at the end of my project when I was 100% sure that It was completely ready. Then when the test print came out okay I printed my finals on photographic paper to give it a more professional finish. So in conclusion for reducing the amount of prints of my final design I also reduced paper wastage as most of my work was digital with limited use of the printer.
  • In what ways have you considered the ethical implications of your project process and outcomes? So when designing and thinking about ethical implications my design might have on my target audience, I decided to leave out the heavy use of drugs (amphetamines), and violence between mods and rockers as I didn’t want to upset the readers of the magazine as this could be a big variety in age groups however on the other side I didn’t want to offend people with in the subculture either. So I think I managed to capture the mods really well in my design without any ethical implications.
  • In sustainability and ethical terms in what ways was your work in this project an improvement or a backward step for you as a socially conscious designer? Well I think this could be a step forward for me as a socially conscious designer as I have had to do some serious research into the mod subculture and I think my design is very suited to the brief. I don’t think by me doing this project that it has effected my name as a graphic designer, however people who don’t or didn’t like the mods make not like my designs or concepts. If I thought that this project or subculture was wrong or went against my beliefs I would have chosen a different subculture. I was also more aware of how much wastage happens in the printing process so I wanted to keep an eye on that and make sure that no or minimal wastage was produced. So in ethical terms I believe that this has made an improvement on me as a socially conscious designer.
  • What targets can you make at this point for your work in the future as a socially conscious designer?  I think for the next project I need to be more aware sustainable design during the designing process and possibly thinking about what materials Im printing on to and how they will affect the environment and me as a designer. I also need to be aware of the Ethics of my design before the making process, it should happen right at the beginning in the idea generation stage.
